No love?

MTV Splashpage today announced a poll about which comic book movie you are most excited about in 2010 and we weren’t even included?  Clearly a case of cultural bias against one of the most beloved comic book characters in the world just because he’s Italian.  I think all of our Italian fans should let them know how they feel by visiting and writing in “Dead of Night”.  Here’s the link: http://splashpage.mtv.com/2009/12/01/poll-which-2010-comic-book-movie-has-you-most-excited/#more-25687.  Heck, even you Brandon fans can if you like.  Clearly there is no appreciation for Mr. Routh there, either!

  1. I saw that. What a rip. I already voted. “)

  2. Thanks for alerting us to the poll Dan. I just posted the info to The Planet and also to the “Dead of Night” Film wall of Facebook. How dare they leave “Dead of Night” off the list.

  3. Dan Braverman Says:

Almost certainly due to the lack of a trailer and precious little news in the past several months. Dead of Night has not been in the public forum much–YET. I believe that as soon as the trailer and associated hype hits the internet, Dylan will make up for lost time. All good things to those who wait!

  4. One more thing DD fans. I just noticed we can vote once a day from now till next Monday December 7th! Remember to go back each day and help the write-ins add up.
I know it may be a long shot since it is not listed but think how cool it would be if it won as a write-in. Spread the word.

  5. Okey, you won. You got noticed.

Completely forgot about “Dead of Night” on this list, folks. If that’s the film you’re aching to see in 2010, make sure to write it in the “Other” category!

But this other post got my attention:

You’re absolutely right. It totally slipped my mind. I knew I forgot at least one film in this list, and I think the lack of any news about it lately put it out of my mind. Make sure to vote for it in the “Other” category!

Lets not let this movie go unnoticed due to lack of news please. Stroke the fire with some good news for us and the comic tabloids. There must be something you can give us.
    Thanks

  6. Yourick@splashpage posted this on the poll comments after several of us wrote in DoN.

There is your answer. “No News” translated to “No Love.” With so little news in the last several months only the die-heart fans are continuing to check here as well as other places like The Planet.

You have commented in this blog that the marketing people didn’t want to “peak” too soon. Looks like they got their wish.

  7. Dan,

As both a Dylan Dog and Brandon Routh fan, I need to say this: I used to have full confidence in the team behind Dead of Night but this post makes me shake my head in disbelief and suddenly makes me wonder how clueless you guys are.

“Cultural bias?” “No love for Brandon?” DUH. You guys do a movie based on a character mainstream America has never heard of, hire a cast most people couldn’t pick out of a police lineup if their life depended on it (even paps have confused Brandon with Tom Welling and, frankly, Taye Diggs is the biggest star you have right now), get NO coverage from the mainstream media (where were the behind-the-scenes sneak peek visits by Access Hollywood? ET? Extra?), get no buzz from the industry trades, have no firm release date and you’re – wait for it – SURPRISED that a fanboy site completely ignores DoN and features a list of films with name actors and tons of industry buzz instead?

I hate to break this to you but you guys have an uphill battle and have had one from the start, and, if the movie’s PR and marketing teams hadn’t realized this until now, you all need to get a clue and fast – replace some people outright if you need to, because clearly someone’s sleeping on the job. And tell Brandon to stop ignoring his fans; instead of popping in once in a while on his most rabid website to say hello or give us scoops, he pretty much wrote us off after the SR hype died down and probably only has a few dozen fans left rather than the thousands who’d check in regularly back in 2006 and 2007. (And he may want to look into these newfangled inventions my people call ‘Facebook’ and ‘Twitter’, which I hear are free and which – I don’t know – a celebrity might use to broadcast new and exciting happenings to thousands of followers at once. Just sayin’.)

Because ticket sales from mainstream America are what is going to make or break your movie, not the fanboys. But when you’ve basically got no firm release date and the tastemakers at the fanboy sites have already decided other movies are cooler than yours, then you’ve REALLY got a problem.

And, for the record, I’m saying all this because I DO care; otherwise, I’d do what most people usually do: say nothing and quietly go elsewhere.

    Eric

  8. Dan,

I’m the editor of Splash Page, and I acknowledged several times in the comment section that I’d completely forgotten about Dead of Night when I created the poll. Unfortunately, I can’t add an extra option to an in-progress poll. However, I encouraged fans to vote for “Dead of Night” in the “other” category, and I’ll make sure to count up all the votes manually to make sure it’s represented right with the rest of the films.

I’m a bit surprised that you’re saying we haven’t given the film any love, as we’ve covered every major and minor development in the project since its beginnings, and interviewed Brandon about it on several occasions. Here’s an archive of our coverage thus far:

    http://splashpage.mtv.com/tag/dead-of-night

Heck, I’d go so far as to say we’ve covered “Dead of Night” more than most sites out there!

Feel free to send an email my way, as I’d love to hear more about the movie… but as it is, I haven’t heard a word from anyone involved with it in quite a while!

    – Rick Marshall

  9. deadofnightmovie Says:

    Eric and Rick,
The “no love” and “cultural bias” kind of comments were meant to be jokes. I’m really sorry if they didn’t come off that way. Believe me, I fully understand how much love you have given us, Rick, and I appreciate it. Eric, we’re not a studio film. We have limited resources and money and the people in charge have decided it is best to spend those resources when we actually have a release date. Why get people excited about a film when you can’t tell them when they’ll be able to see it? I’m glad you care and I truly value criticism like this, but the truth of the matter is that we don’t have $30M dollars in P&A money to hire a full time team to work on this. We’re doing the best we can and holding our “A” game until we’re actually on the field. Right now, we don’t even know what time the game starts.

Please, Brandon Routh Is Superman. FX shows the movie often on the channel. The mainstream may not know his name But they know he is Clark Kent/Superman.

And the time the supposedly “confused” him with Welling was not such thing, I’m sure, and everybody knows it.. those paps were just trying to bait him. That’s what they do, they have no other better thing to do.

Other than that, you probably make good points.

  11. Stargazer Says:

“Almost certainly due to the lack of a trailer and precious little news in the past several months. Dead of Night has not been in the public forum much–YET. I believe that as soon as the trailer and associated hype hits the internet, Dylan will make up for lost time. All good things to those who wait!”

Let’s hope. It’d probably be for the best if the movie premieres in Italy since the character is so well known over there. It could create lots of hype (if they like it enough. Hopefully).

And Brandon, we love you hon, but you need to remember that you have fans. Drop a line or two, man.. gives us a little attention. Thanks.

  12. I would be careful about holding too much till you are on the field otherwise you might find you are playing to a nearly empty stadium because people didn’t have enough time to get excited enough to buy tickets to see the game.

I hate to say it but I agree with most of what Eric said. What is really sad is that it doesn’t take a whole lot to keep the fans buzzing. DoN had something worth showing at Comic-con. Why is it not worth showing to the fans here on the web even months later? Exactly what would that cost? We have thought several times we were going to get a trailer only to be let down time after time. DoN was even a no show at the Scream Awards after teasing that the show would be a good showcase to unvail a trailer.

  13. AntoBlueberry Says:

Really, you have to keep the hype going if you want to increase awareness on the movie. The set visits and the few photos are months old now.
I know you can’t announce a release date yet, but a teaser trailer, some new photos are needed after all these months. And putting them on the site and letting the fans spread the word is a no-cost endeavor.
How were they supposed to put DoN on the list when even you don’t know if it will be released in 2010?

  14. Dan,

Is this a real poster or a hoax? Someone posted it over at the movie’s facebook site,

  15. deadofnightmovie Says:

It’s definitely a fake, Star. Pretty good photoshop job, though.

  16. Already voted!

  17. Stargazer Says:

There is this poster called ‘Hollywood South’ over at the MTV site, and I think he’s been a little rude towards Mr. Rick Marshall. He says he worked in this movie. I just think he is not helping the case. Sorry but it’s true.

  18. Dylan Dog sells 1,000,000 copies a month … I think they should consider it.
Nice work on photoshop…means that the film has fans!!

  19. I say if you give Mr Rick Marshall an exclusive, hopefully with new pictures and the trailer, Im sure all hurt feelings will be forgotten. That was an open invitation from him for free publicity. Im sure those in charge dont mind getting free promotions.

  20. Sounds like fans need to pull a “Paranormal” style advertising raid. Just bug the heck out of comic sites, movie sites, where ever the movie can be advertised. It got them noticed on their low budget flick and it cost nothing. That that is the real power of the people.

  21. deadofnightmovie Says:

    Jose,
That “Paranormal Activity” advertising raid actually cost the studio that was distributing it just over $10 Million and came after about 2 years of showing the movie around the festival circuit, building buzz. We don’t even have a finished movie to start showing people yet. It first premiered in October of 2007 but the version most of you saw didn’t premiere until October of 2009. (I might be wrong about this, but I’ve heard it was shot early in 2006 and took them over a year until they actually were able to show it to the first audience at Screamfest.) We don’t yet have a Paramount behind us like they did.

I appreciate everyone’s suggestions, I REALLY do. And I’m very, very happy that we have so many people so passionate about this project but right now most of the people involved are just focused on making sure we have the very best movie we possibly can and putting the finishing touches on something we’re all going to be really proud of. The PR machine will start rolling when we have a firm release date locked in.

Thanks, Peter. Your site has been great to us so far, so we’ll definitely keep you in the loop.

Martim, welcome and don’t worry about your English, I barely speak it myself. :-) Just so you know, the movie is only planned to be called “Dead of Night” in the US. Elsewhere, it will be released as “Dylan Dog”, which is pretty common in Hollywood. Years ago, we did some market research on the name and most Americans thought it sounded like a plush toy or an animated kids story. Silly Americans…

  25. Results of poll.

Dead of Night” also had decent showings, with the latter receiving 7 percent of the total vote via a big outpouring of fan support and an active write-in campaign. (I’d accidentally left the Brandon Routh-starring film out of the poll.)
